Centre for Psychedelics Health Research (CPHR) is a Canadian research and education hub dedicated to advancing rigorous, ethical, and evidence-based psychedelic science. CPHR supports clinical trials, knowledge translation, and public education focused on mental health and serious illness, while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across healthcare, academia, and policy.

Through its partnership with CAN-PACT, CPHR contributes scientific expertise, educational resources, and research leadership to help advance psychedelic-assisted therapy in oncology and palliative care settings. Together, we are working to build responsible clinical pathways, support training and implementation, and expand access to high-quality information for clinicians, researchers, and patients.

The Cultural Importance of Setting in Psychedelic Therapy

Key points in this article:

  • Mindset & Environment Matter: Both an individual’s mindset (“set”) and the therapy environment (“setting”) are shaped by culture and strongly influence psychedelic therapy outcomes.

  • Therapeutic Space: Room design, decor, and symbols can either promote safety and belonging or trigger exclusion and distress.

  • Music Isn’t Neutral: All music carries cultural meaning; playlists should reflect participants’ backgrounds and preferences.

  • Therapist Diversity & Sensitivity: A diverse, culturally aware therapy team fosters greater trust and inclusion.

  • Need for Adaptation: More research and innovation are needed to ensure psychedelic therapy is accessible, relevant, and effective across cultures.

Happy Enough: Can psychedelics improve your mental health?

Psychedelics, substances like LSD and psilocybin mushrooms that cause altered states of consciousness, often remind people of hippies in the 1960s. But more researchers are looking into their potential benefits for our well-being. Scientists say psychedelics – which are illegal for recreational use in Canada – could have massive implications on how we treat and heal from major mental health disorders like PTSD, depression and anxiety. Garvia speaks with Dr. Monnica Williams, clinical psychologist and professor at the University of Ottawa, where she is the co-director of the new master’s program in psychedelics and consciousness studies. They discuss the latest research and whether psychedelics will, and should, become mainstream.
