
Dr. CLAUDIO N SOARES, MD
Full Professor & Former Chair of Psychiatry at Queen's University, Director of the Centre for Psychedelic Health & Research
Biography
Dr. Soares is a Full Professor and former Chair of Psychiatry at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and the Inaugural Director of the Centre for Psychedelic Health and Research at Providence Care Hospital & Queen’s University. He is also the Executive Lead for the Canadian Biomarker Integration Network in Depression (CAN-BIND) and the Regional Lead for Mental Health and Addictions at Ontario Health East.

He trained as a psychiatrist at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, completing a Ph.D. on estrogen's role in managing depression in midlife women, and a postdoctoral fellowship in Perinatal and Reproductive Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, where he was also a researcher and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry before moving to Canada.
His research focuses on hormonal and non-hormonal treatments for midlife women with mood and anxiety disorders, vasomotor symptoms, and sleep issues. He is also exploring digital health technologies, such as wearable devices, to enhance phenotyping, treatment monitoring, and relapse prevention of depression and sleep disorders across the lifespan. Recently, he expanded his work to include psychedelics for psychiatric disorders, menopausal symptoms, and existential distress in late-stage cancer.
Dr. Soares has served as the PI in over 30 studies and has received numerous grants from CIHR, NIH, and three NARSAD awards. He has delivered more than 240 presentations worldwide and published over 220 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as JAMA, Nature, and the American Journal of Psychiatry.
His contributions to CAN-PACT include full engagement and logistical support from the Centre for Psychedelic Health and Research for the design and implementation of clinical trials, as well as the development and delivery of educational activities and training for the next generation of researchers and clinicians in psychedelic science and health.
