Dr. Jean Mathews, MBBS, MD

Palliative Care Physician, Assistant Professor, & Principal Investigator at Queen's University

Biography

Dr. Jean Mathews is a palliative care physician from India. He moved to Canada in 2018 and completed clinical and research fellowship training at University Health Network and The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto. He joined the Division of Palliative Medicine at Queen's University in 2021 as Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine with cross-appointment to the Department of Oncology. He is also a Principal Investigator with the Division of Cancer Care and Epidemiology, Sinclair Cancer Research Institute, Queen's University.

Dr. Mathews' areas of interest are quality improvement and global oncology palliative care. In 2023, he received a SEAMO innovation grant to implement a social support intervention for patients with serious illness facing social isolation. This intervention is informed by the global Compassionate Communities movement and the volunteer-led community-based palliative care delivery model in Kerala, India. In 2024, he received a Department of Medicine TIME-UHKF Incubator Grant to measure and improve prognostic awareness in patients with advanced cancer.

Dr. Mathews' interest in psychedelic research is focused on their clinical application for existential distress in patients with life-limiting illnesses such as advanced cancer. His goal with CANPACT is to support the integration of psychedelic assisted therapy into palliative care practice in Canada to improve outcomes for patients.
