LAURA HERNANDEZ, MSc, BFA, BA (Honours)

PhD Student, Clinical Psychology, University of Calgary

Biography

Laura is a PhD student in Clinical Psychology at the University of Calgary. She has broad interests in health psychology, behavioural medicine, chronic illness (e.g., cardiovascular disease, cancer), and health equity. Through academic and conference experiences, Laura became interested in the biopsychosocial-spiritual/cultural and socioecological factors that interact with health and well-being, including the different experiences of equity-deserving communities living with chronic conditions and their underrepresentation in research. As a CAN-PACT trainee, her research will focus on psychedelic-assisted therapies within oncological care, investigating cultural set and setting, cultural attunement, and the perspectives of underrepresented groups.

Laura completed an MSc in Clinical Psychology and a double major in her bachelor’s degree, earning a BFA in Visual Studies with distinction and a BA (Honours) in Psychology, First Class. She is passionate about improving people’s health and well-being, aligning with CAN-PACT’s mission to enhance the emotional and psychological health of those living with advanced cancer. Her clinical and research training includes diverse practicum experiences with an increasing focus on integrative approaches and research in health psychology, critical care medicine, and behavioural medicine. Laura is eager to expand her knowledge and skills in psychosocial and integrative oncology, as well as health equity research, through meaningful community engagement.
